FAQ’s

Q. Why does the library matter when I have the internet?
A. The internet can give you information, but a library gives you access, equity, and community. Not everyone has high-speed internet, expensive devices, or knows how to navigate the flood of online content. Libraries level the playing field—offering free technology, trusted guidance from skilled librarians, and safe, welcoming spaces for learning at every stage of life. From storytime for toddlers to career help for adults and tech training for seniors, libraries don’t just store knowledge—they connect people to opportunity.

“The library is one of the last places you can go, completely free, with no pressure to spend a dime—just a welcoming space to learn, connect, and explore.” – Community Member

Q. Why should I give money to something my taxes already pay for?
A. Tax dollars keep the library’s doors open—covering essentials like buildings, utilities, and core staff. But it’s private donations that take the library from good to exceptional. Your support bridges the gap, funding innovative programs like the Summer Learning Adventure, Middle School Career Exploration, and the Library of Things—initiatives that wouldn’t exist without the Virginia Beach Library Foundation.

Q. What types of donations can the library foundation accept?
A. The foundation accepts gifts of cash, securities, real estate and cash-value life insurance policies. We can assist you with arranging the transfer of stocks, or to discuss establishing trusts or other planned giving opportunities. The foundation is pleased to process corporate matching gift requests.

Q. How is the Virginia Beach Library Foundation different from the Friends of the Library?
A: While both groups champion the library, their roles are distinct:

Friends of the Library

  • Membership-based volunteer group
  • Hosts book sales, events, and volunteer activities to support day-to-day library needs
  • Focuses on community engagement and small-scale support
  • Operates branch by branch

Virginia Beach Library Foundation

  • Nonprofit fundraising organization
  • Secures private donations, grants, and sponsorships to fund major programs and initiatives
  • Focuses on long-term impact and large-scale, value-added services
  • Supports the entire Virginia Beach Public Library system

Q. Besides donations, how can I contribute to the library’s success?
A. Financial contributions are just one way to help libraries thrive. You can:

  • Become a Sponsor: Underwrite events or programs to gain visibility while supporting literacy and community growth.
  • Form a Strategic Partnership: Collaborate on initiatives that align with your organization’s mission and the library’s goals.
  • Offer In-Kind Support: Provide goods, professional services, or space to strengthen programs and operations.
  • Share Your Skills: Volunteer your expertise in areas like technology training, marketing, event planning, or mentorship.
  • Advocate for Libraries: Champion library funding and resources with decision-makers and share the library’s impact in your networks.

Together, these contributions help expand access, spark innovation, and ensure the library remains a vital community hub.
